As we mark National Volunteer Week (April 21-27, 2024), the ACGME would like to express profound gratitude to our dedicated volunteers. The work of the ACGME could not happen without volunteer experts, who inform nearly every aspect of the organization, from the Board, to accreditation and recognition, to the Milestones, and more. Volunteers have always played a vital role in advancing the ACGME's Mission to enhance graduate medical education (GME) and improve public health and patient care. Their selfless contributions of time, expertise, and passion have shaped and continue to advance the landscape of medical education and health care delivery.
Thank You, ACGME Volunteers!
Volunteers are the heart of our organization, embodying the spirit of service and collaboration. They are physicians and non-physicians, community leaders, and experts in their fields across the spectrum of specialties. ACGME volunteers serve on committees and task forces, developing and advancing content for programs like the Milestones and the Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Program, and expanding initiatives like those in support of physician well-being. They draft and revise essential documents, such as specialty-specific Program Requirements, and are key drivers of GME on the ground. No matter their role, they exemplify excellence in GME.
In 2024, amidst the evolving landscape of health care after a global pandemic, our more than 800 volunteers contributed over 65,000 hours of their time. This includes, but is not limited to:
- 120 individuals supporting the review and revision of the Milestones
- 46 members of the Board of Directors
- 510 Review and Recognition Committee members, including 31 resident/fellow members and 30 public representatives
- 12 members of the Coordinator Advisory Group
- 60 CLER Evaluation Committee members
- 17 individuals on the Medically Underserved Areas and Populations Advisory Group
Looking Ahead
During this National Volunteer Week, we also look ahead with optimism to the “new normal,” knowing that our volunteers are steadfast in their work to improving GME. Next year, while the ACGME will experience transition with a new President and Chief Executive Officer, we know the work will continue seamlessly thanks to the dedication of our volunteers. Together, we will continue to collaborate, innovate, shape the future of health care, and make a difference in the lives of residents and fellows, patients, and communities nationwide.
