Message from the CEO

Dear Colleagues,

As I near the end of my fourth year at the ACGME, I find myself reflecting on the many challenges the GME community has faced, and the positive changes that have resulted from these opportunities to improve. These changes have moved the ACGME forward on the path to exemplary accreditation, taking us from a minimum standards accreditor to one that encourages excellence and innovation. Together with the community at large, we have completed a thorough review of the learning environment for residents and training standards that demonstrate our commitment to patient safety and the provision of a humanistic educational environment. The ACGME has extended its commitment to excellence by developing international accreditation in Singapore. The Journal of Graduate Medical Education has provided the GME community with the opportunity to share their innovations and discoveries. None of these outcomes would have been possible without your participation and collaboration. And, more exciting changes will evolve as we strive to continually improve. Over the next few years, we will embark on a new accreditation system which will reward excellence in training programs. A new sponsor site visit program will assess institutional commitment to patient safety and quality improvement. Yet, we are faced with many fiscal challenges to our programs and sponsors that, if not resolved or effectively managed, may make our journey toward excellence very difficult indeed.

The 2012 ACGME Annual Educational Conference, Encouraging Excellence, will provide a venue for the graduate medical education community to expand their thinking in attempts to ensure residency program quality. This year's conference will include over 100 workshops and didactic sessions submitted from the GME community consistent with our theme, and will give our colleagues an opportunity to showcase their innovations. Special topics in the conference include faculty development, resident and faculty engagement in patient safety, resident well-being, assessment, the learning environment, and, of course, accreditation. The conference will begin on Thursday with an introductory course for new program directors and a program coordinator forum, which will run concurrently. The Marvin R. Dunn Poster Session will continue to provide examples of innovations and accomplishments from our community in graduate medical education.

It is my distinct pleasure to invite you to attend the 2012 ACGME Annual Educational Conference in Orlando, Florida, from March 1-4. I look forward to seeing you personally, and the opportunity to convene with the graduate medical education community!

Sincerely,

Thomas J. Nasca, MD, MACP
