ACGME Leadership Skills Training Program for Chief Residents 2012
Leadership Skills Training Program for Chief Residents 9 workshops offered in 4 locations Jacksonville, FL — Chicago, IL — Philadelphia, PA — Redondo Beach, CA
For Incoming Chief Residents —Do you have the skills needed to be an effective leader? During medical training, education is directed toward providing competency in the practice of medicine. Although some skills overlap with those needed to be an effective chief resident, little specific attention is given to the skills needed to be an effective leader. The Leadership Skills Training Program for Chief Residents is a workshop which introduces a model of leadership to:
enhance each participants self-awareness;
develop knowledge and appreciation of group and interpersonal behavior;
learn additional personal skills critical to success and satisfaction as both a clinician and leader including ability to manage conflict, give and receive feedback, manage stress and work with non-physician administrators.
To date, most of these training activities have been directed to pediatricians, family practitioners, and psychiatrists. The ACGME is pleased to offer this experiential learning technique across all medical specialties.
Objectives: The course combines a mixture of didactic and experiential learning techniques to provide a transitional experience into the role of chief resident and to enrich each participant's understanding of:
personal leadership styles and their strengths and weaknesses as leaders;
effectively giving and receiving feedback and evaluation;
the complexities of conflict resolution and negotiation;
group and institutional forces affecting the chief resident role.
2011 Conference attendee comments:
“The format of general knowledge base followed by focus group with increasing level of active participation is perhaps the most effective format of retention and learning I’ve been a part of.”
“The second day opened my eyes to who I am and how it will influence the interactions I have with my fellow residents, program director, and medical students.”
“A complete, concise review of group and individual dynamics, conflict resolution, feedback and support.”
