Review Committee Executive Directors Bio

Anne Gravel Sullivan, PhD

Dr. Gravel Sullivan joined the ACGME in 2014, and is the Executive Director for the Review Committee for Anesthesiology and Director of the ACGME’s Office of Distance Learning. Dr. Gravel Sullivan has over 20 years of experience in program development and evaluation, including distance programming, in adult professional education. She has held administrative leadership roles in graduate medical education at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, where she oversaw institutional GME accreditation operations and curriculum development for resident and faculty programming. During that time, she spearheaded the development and implementation of an institution-wide online resident patient safety and quality improvement curriculum.

Previously, she worked for the University of Wisconsin (UW) Department of Medicine, facilitating the development of departmental infrastructure for GME operations, and the UW’s Center for Education and Work. While at the Center, she was in charge of professional development programming for UW state and technical college campus webmasters, faculty members, and other stakeholders in creating and maintaining accessible websites and other electronic documents.

Her background includes curriculum design, including for web- and simulation-based learning, and interprofessional education, particularly in the area of effective communication and team skills to support patient safety and quality improvement. She has additional expertise in instructional technology, distance learning, change management and building organizational capacity to support learning.

Dr. Gravel Sullivan earned her doctorate in speech communication at the Pennsylvania State University and holds a Master’s in communication studies with an emphasis in media production, as well as a certificate in Distance Education Professional Development. Her areas of research include communication education and curriculum development, the rhetorical construction of realist narratives, and teaching effective communication and team skills to support patient safety.
