Information Related to the ACGME's Effort to Address
Resident Duty Hours and Other Relevant Resource Materials

At its February 2003 meeting, the ACGME Board of Directors granted final approval to common program and institutional standards for resident duty hours that originated in the report of the ACGME Work Group on Resident Duty Hours and the Learning Environment. RRCs will individually two areas of the requirement relating to the period of up to 6 hours after the end of a 24-hour continuous duty period - the definition of "new patient" and which ambulatory continuity experiences are allowed during the 6 hours. These RRC-specific definitions will be approved at the June 2003 meeting of the ACGME Board of Directors. These standards will become effective on July 1, 2003.
