Downloads with Internet Explorer

When you use Internet Explorer as your web browser and you start to download a Word file (.doc) from a website, the default feature of IE is to open the program Word and display the document.

If you would like to turn off the default download feature in your browser (ver 4.x only) to simply download the file to your computer, follow the instructions below:

  1. In the [View] menu, select [Options]
  2. Click the [Programs] tab, then in the [Viewers] box, click on the [File Types] button
  3. Scroll down the list of file types and click on [Microsoft Word Template]
  4. Click the [Edit] button
  5. In the [Actions] box, the word [New] should be in bold type
  6. Click on [New] and then click [Remove] button
  7. Click [yes] in the confirm dialogue, then close the windows with the [Close] button
  8. Close the [Options] window with the [OK] button
