PM Competencies (Linkages)
In October of 2000, a Quadrad team of the RRC, ABPM and specialty societies reviewed the program requirements for preventive medicine and their linkages to the 6 general competencies. The team determined that rewriting the program requirements into the 6 General Competencies would result in the loss of clarity of the academic and practicum years, as well as the distinctions between the three specialty areas of aerospace, occupational and general preventive medicine.
The team established the linkages of the Preventive medicine competencies to the
6 General Competencies. Each preventive medicine competency is linked to one or
more general competencies (e.g. patient care, systems based practice etc.) Please
use this document as guidance when developing your Program Information Forms and
for communication to site visitors. Further, the attached document can be used
to guide the development of evaluation forms that clearly tie a Preventive medicine
competency to one of the 6 General Competencies. You will need to do this latter
exercise within your respective institutions.
Finally, the Quadrad team noted some suggested evaluation tools for your consideration. These are not required, but they are examples of possible evaluation tools for a preventive medicine competency that might be developed in the future (e.g. 360-degree evaluations specific to health care to evaluate communication, working in teams etc.)
We hope this additional information is a useful guideline document to you as the ACGME/ABMS movement in implementing, evaluating and monitoring general competencies continues.
