John Duval is the Chief Executive Officer of Medical College of Virginia Hospitals of Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in Richmond, Virginia. As CEO of this 779-bed teaching hospital, including more than 600 faculty physicians, he oversees the day-to-day activities of the academic medical center. His responsibilities include strategic planning, performance management and improvement, financial management workforce, development, and community outreach.

Mr. Duval received his BS in biological sciences from the University of California Irvine in 1976 and earned his Masters in Business Administration from the University of California Irvine in 1981.


.Prior to joining Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, he served as Chief Operating Officer of University Medical Center, in Tucson, Arizona. Prior to joining University Medical Center, he served in executive leadership roles at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and the University of California, Irvine Medical Center.

He is currently a member of the American Hospital Association, where he serves on the Maternal and Child Health Governing Council, and is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. He serves on the boards of Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond, Richmond Chapter of the American Red Cross, University Health System Consortium and Valentine Richmond History Center.

While in Arizona, Mr. Duval was active in various community organizations including serving as a board member and treasurer of Boys and Girls Club of Tucson and serving on the board of the American Red Cross. He has been an active member of Rotary International and coached youth soccer. Mr. Duval has published numerous articles, monographs and book chapters.
