Innovative Approaches for Resident Duty Hours

On July 1, 2003, new common ACGME standards for resident duty hours went into effect. The aim of these standards is to promote safe patient care, resident learning and resident well-being.

The documents below present information related to the new duty hour standards, including the program and institutional requirements related to resident duty hours, the report of the Work Group on Duty Hours and other information resources.

Below is a selection of innovative ideas to respond to the ACGME standards for resident duty hours presented at the 2003 and 2004 ACGME Educational Conferences. Some of these received awards or honorable mentions from the judges for the poster session. They are shown as one element of the ACGME’s effort to solicit and disseminate innovative approaches programs and sponsoring institutions have used to respond to the duty hour standards.
