Mhairi G. MacDonald, MbchB., FRCP(E), DCH


Dr. Mhairi MacDonald received her pre-medical and medical school education at Edinburgh University, where she graduated with an MBChB in 1969. She completed her house physician training at Western General Hospital, the Royal Infirmary, and the Hospital for Sick Children, all in Edinburgh, Scotland, followed by training as a registrar in General Pediatrics and Neonatology at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and at Victoria Hospital in Kirkaldy, Scotland.She completed additional training in the United States as a clinical assistant in the Department of Pediatric Hematology at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center, as a Post-doctoral Fellow in Neonatology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and as a Research Fellow in Neonatology at the Capital Regional Perinatal Center in Albany, New York.


From 1983 to 1988 she served as an Associate Professor of Child Health and Development at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, from 1988 through 1998 she was Professor of Pediatrics at the same institution. Since 1998 she holds an appointment as Clinical Professor at the same institution. From 1978 to 1997 she was an attending neonatologist at Children's National Medical. She most recently served as Director of Neonatology at Loudoun Hospital Center, Leesburg, Virginia.


In addition to her clinical work, Dr. MacDonald has held research appointments including a joint appointment in the Division of Developmental Pharmacology at the National Institutes of Health and the Bureau of Biologics in the Federal Drug Administration from July 1978 through January 1983 and, prior to that, an appointment in the New York State Health Department's Division of Laboratories and Research. She also served as the Director of Research and later Vice Chairman for Research and Post-doctoral Education in the Division of Neonatology at Children's National Medical Center/George Washington University.


She joined the ACGME Accreditation Field Staff in March, 2000. Since then, she has conducted site visits of over 593 residency programs.
