Thomas E. Sumner, MD

Thomas Sumner, MD is board-certified in pediatrics and radiology, and sub-board certified in pediatric radiology. He graduated cum laude from Kalamazoo College, Kalamazoo, Michigan, and received his MD from the University of Rochester, New York. After residency training in pediatrics and subsequent residency training in radiology at Yale-New Haven Hospital, he completed a fellowship in pediatric radiology at the Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, Ohio.


He began his academic career by serving as an instructor in pediatrics and radiology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and as attending radiologist at Children's Hospital Medical Center. This was followed by two years as an Assistant Clinical Professor in Radiology at the University of California, Davis. In 1976, he assumed an academic position in pediatrics and radiology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and advanced to full professor in 1984. He has been with Wake Forest University School of Medicine since 1976. Dr. Sumner is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.


Dr. Sumner is a member of a number of professional societies, including the American College of Radiology, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Society for Pediatric Radiology. He has been a visiting professor at numerous institutions. His professional interests include pediatric imaging, child abuse, pediatric musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and neonatal radiology, digital radiography in pediatrics, and radiologic education.


Dr. Sumner joined the Accreditation Field Staff of the ACGME in January, 2001 and has conducted 354 site visits since then.


Dr. Sumner is married, and he and his wife have a son and a daughter. He lives in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
