William T. McKinney, MD

William T. McKinney, MD, received a BA degree (cum laude) in Psychology and Chemistry from Baylor University-Waco and an MD degree from Vanderbilt University-Nashville. He completed internship training at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and residency training in psychiatry at the University of North Carolina School at Chapel Hill, North Carolina and at Stanford University. Dr. McKinney has held positions at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, where he served on the Psychiatry faculty, and as chair of the Department of Psychiatry from 1975 to 1980.


Dr. McKinney recently retired from his position as Asher Professor of Psychiatry at Northwestern University, where he served since 1993, and where he held the position of Director of the Asher Center for the Study and Treatment of Depressive Disorders in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University Medical School. He was also faculty at both the Northwestern University Institute for Neuroscience and the Center for Sleep and Circadian Biology.

Dr. McKinney is a Diplomat, National Board of Medical Examiners and received medical licensure from both the State of Wisconsin and the State of Illinois. He has a Certificate in Psychiatry from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is a member of the Illinois Psychiatric Society (1994-Present).


During his career, Dr. McKinney has served as a consultant, member or board member of many university and research institutions. He has served on the editorial boards of a number of leading psychiatric journals and has 125 journal publications and has authored two books. He has reviewed manuscripts for more than 20 journals and has reviewed numerous professional books.


Dr. McKinney joined the ACGME in April 2006. He and his wife Carolyn live in Chicago and have two children and one grandchild.
