Message from the CEO
At a time when the national focus has turned to the regulation of resident duty hours and finding innovative approaches to ensure that residents are not fatigued, it is imperative that we also continue to focus on our raison d’être: providing well-supervised quality education for residents within a system that ensures the best care for patients. The 2010 ACGME Annual Educational Conference, “Transitions in GME,” will provide a venue for the graduate medical education community to examine the changes occurring within our systems and share strategies to improve residency program quality. This year’s conference will include workshops and didactic sessions submitted from the GME community consistent with the theme, transitions in our systems. This will include changes in the learning environment and assessment, as well as the accreditation and specialty specific sessions. The Marvin Dunn Poster Session will provide examples of the challenges and opportunities in providing safe and effective transitions in patient care. The conference will begin with an international pre-conference entitled “Supervision in GME: Provision of Excellence in Both Patient Care and Resident Education” and an introductory course for new program directors and coordinators.
During this time of challenge and transition in all of medicine, it is imperative that we all offer input into the fundamental redesign of our clinical care and educational environment. The 2010 Annual Educational Conference will offer program directors, designated institutional officials, program coordinators and all others involved in the education of residents the opportunity to do just that.
It is my distinct pleasure to invite you to attend the 2010 ACGME Annual Educational Conference in Nashville, Tennessee from March 4-7, 2010. I look forward to seeing you personally, and the opportunity to convene with the graduate medical education community!
Sincerely,
Thomas J. Nasca, M.D., MACP
