CHICAGO, Feb. 22, 2005 – The Board of Directors of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has approved program requirements for a new subspecialty and the formation of a new committee on learning.
At its February 15 business meeting the ACGME Board approved the program requirements for a new subspecialty, neuromuscular medicine, which is a subspecialty of neurology. The Board also approved revisions to the program requirements for obstetrics and gynecology and deferred revisions to the program requirements for pediatrics for further editing.
The Board also voted to form a new Committee on Innovation in the Learning Environment. The committee will explore ways to enhance the learning environment for residents, collect and interpret data on the effect of the common duty hour standards and other changes in the learning environment, and collect and communicate information on best practices and innovative approaches in residency programs.
The Board also voted to create an Awards Committee, which will be responsible for reviewing and nominating recipients for the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach awards, which honor outstanding program directors; the new Courage to Lead award, which will honor notable designated institutional officials; and the John C. Gienapp award, which honors people who have made significant contributions to graduate medical education.
The ACGME’s summer Board of Directors’ meeting will be held June 27-28 in Rosemont, Ill.
