ACGME Data Resource Book packed with nearly 100 pages of statistics on residents, programs and sponsoring institutions
CHICAGO, Mar. 25, 2008– The academic year 2006-07 edition of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Data Resource Book is now available for purchase on the ACGME website. .
The book is filled with charts and graphs that provide a snapshot of graduate medical education in the United States . The aggregated statistics are calculated from information submitted by programs and sponsoring institutions to the ACGME's web-based data collection system.
Among the statistical highlights in the data book:
- In academic year 2006-07, 88% of the 8,355 accredited programs had full accreditation, 9% had initial or provisional accreditation, 3% had accreditation with probation or warning, and 1% were still accredited but with a status of future withdrawal of accreditation.
- There were 298 newly accredited programs in academic year 2005-07. Of those, 61% were subspecialty programs.
- The states with the highest number of residents per 100,000 people are New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. States with the fewest number of residents per 100,000 people are Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.
- Core specialties with the largest percentage of residents enrolled in programs are internal medicine (24.8%), family medicine (10.8%), pediatrics (9%), and surgery (8.2%). Specialties enrolling the smallest percentage of residents in programs are nuclear medicine (0.2%), medical genetics (0.1%), and colon and rectal surgery (0.1%).
- Core specialties with the largest percentage of female residents are obstetrics and gynecology (74%), pediatrics (61%), and dermatology (60%). Specialties with the smallest percentage of female residents are neurological surgery (11%), orthopaedic surgery (11%), and thoracic surgery (11%).
