CHICAGO, March 30, 2005 – The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education is seeking nominations for a new award that each year will honor an outstanding designated institutional official.
The Courage to Lead Award will recognize one designated institutional official each year who has demonstrated excellence in overseeing residency programs at his or her sponsoring institution. A designated institutional official, or DIO, is the person with the authority and responsibility for all graduate medical education programs in a teaching hospital, community hospital or other type of institution that sponsors residency programs.
The ACGME also awards the annual Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach awards, which honor outstanding residency program directors. The Courage to Teach awards are named after Parker J. Palmer, a noted sociologist and teacher who wrote The Courage to Teach.
“Taking the formation of residents seriously requires true grit in a time like this,” said David C. Leach, MD, executive director of the ACGME. “Designated institutional officials hold the values and traditions of medicine, and are judged by fidelity as well as effectiveness. The ACGME would like to celebrate and publicly acknowledge institutional leaders who have been exemplars to the rest of us in this important work.”
Designated institutional officials can be nominated by other faculty, department chairs, administrators or residents. Nominations must include a completed application form, one or more letters of support, and the nominee’s curriculum vitae. Nominated DIOs must serve at an institution with a favorable status and have at least five years of experience.
Nominations are due by June 15. Application forms and detailed information on the nomination process are posted on the ACGME’s Web site, www.acgme.org. For more information, contact Marsha Miller, ACGME associate executive director, at 312.755.5041.
