CHICAGO, July 14, 2005 – The Board of Directors of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education approved a new policy manual on June 28 at the ACGME’s summer meeting

The updated ACGME Manual of Policies, Procedures, and Bylaws was rewritten in a more concise, reader-friendly style and incorporates major changes in ACGME policy. These changes include a new accreditation status, initial accreditation; a new withdrawal status, expedited withdrawal; and the deletion of provisional accreditation and summary withdrawal. The manual also reflects the decision by the ACGME to accredit sponsoring institutions, instead of granting favorable or unfavorable reviews.

“Accreditation involves discernment and public recognition of a program’s or institution’s success at meeting published standards,” said David C. Leach, MD, executive director of the ACGME. “The new ACGME Manual of Policies, Procedures, and Bylaws allows for institutional accreditation. In addition to our longstanding interest in competent individuals, we can now recognize competent institutions.”

During the revision process, the ACGME solicited comments from program directors, designated institutional officials, and organizations that appoint physicians to the 27 residency review committees. The Board approved a draft version of the manual at its February 2005 meeting. Following a review and comment period by the academic medicine community, the Board voted on the final version of the manual.

The ACGME Manual of Policies, Procedures, and Bylaws is posted on the Council’s Web site:
