CHICAGO, Oct. 26, 2009 - The 2008-2009 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Data Resource Book has been published on the ACGME website. The free online publication can be viewed at www.acgme.org/databook.
.
The data book contains 104 pages of tables and charts with aggregate statistical data on institutions, programs, and residents. Among the myriad statistics are data on the number of residents broken down by gender, state, and specialty; number of programs by specialty; number of sponsoring institutions; average accreditation cycle length by specialty; and number of newly accredited programs.
The 2008-2009 statistics include the following numbers:
- A total of 109,482 residents were on duty in 8,734 residency programs. This represented an increase of 1,631 residents and 244 programs from the total number of residents and programs in academic year 2007-2008.
- Core specialties with the largest percentage of residents on duty are internal medicine (24.6%), family medicine (10.6%), pediatrics (8.9%), and surgery (8%).
- Although subspecialty programs comprise more than 50% of all residency programs, only 17% of all residents are in subspecialty programs.
- There were 328 newly accredited programs. Of those, the majority were subspecialty programs in hospice and palliative care, vascular surgery, and adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology.
The 2007-2008 data book is also available online as a PDF file. Paperback editions of the data book for the previous five years may be purchased at www.acgme.org/databook.
