CHICAGO, Dec. 8, 2003 – The ACGME is proud to announce the publication of its first annual data book, Accreditation Data Systems (ADS) Graduate Medical Education Data Academic Year 2002-03. The book is a comprehensive, 42-page compilation of the ACGME’s aggregate statistical data on residents, residency programs and sponsoring institutions for academic year 2002-03.
The book lists aggregate statistical data the ACGME has gathered through its Internet-based system from sponsoring institutions and ACGME-accredited residency programs. The book includes tables, graphs and charts listing aggregate data on residents on duty in ACGME-accredited programs, other resident information, program accreditation status, program director turnover and participating teaching institutions.
Highlights from the data book include:
- In academic year 2002-03, 713 institutions sponsored a total of 7,878 ACGME-accredited residency programs with 98,484 residents.
- Sixty-seven percent of residents in academic year 2002-03 were graduates of US-LCME-accredited medical schools; 27% were international medical school graduates and 6% were graduates of osteopathic medical schools.
- Internal medicine programs had the highest percentage of residents, (25.4%), followed by family practice (11.8%) and pediatrics (9.1%).
- Women constituted more than half of the residents in obstetrics and gynecology (71%), medical genetics (63%), pediatrics (55%) and dermatology (55%) programs.
