Journal of Graduate Medical Education December 2011 Issue Now Available

CHICAGO, January 3, 2012 – The December 2011 issue of the Journal of Graduate Medical Education (JGME) is now available online, and the print edition is being mailed this week. Program directors and designated institutional officials can access the table of contents and full text articles via the “Tools/Reference” section in the Accreditation Data System (ADS), which will transfer them to the JGME website.

A guest editorial on multi-source feedback affirms it as a meaningful way to assess “difficult to evaluate” competencies, including professionalism, practice-based learning and improvement, and teamwork. An editorial on qualitative research notes its value when issues are being explored and theory is being developed.

A perspective on teaching and working with Generation Y recommends flexibility and adaptability, and understanding the life experience and outlook of this generation.

Research studies in this issue include the impact of work hour reductions on surgical education in the Netherlands; the relationship between peer ratings of clinical excellence and trainee identification of faculty role models; differences in the experience with newborn resuscitation for pediatricians and family physicians, and much more.

Educational innovations described include a curriculum for communication skills relevant to sharing bad news and disclosing unanticipated events; use of high fidelity simulation in teaching systems improvement; an avatar-based virtual geriatric home safety examination; and use of art as reflective triggers for medical learners.

The December “Rip-Out” (brief practical guidance for program directors) offers recommendation for developing educational goals and objectives.

The “News and Views” section features an interview with Ralph Greco, MD, the winner of the 2011 John Gienapp Award.
