ACGME announces Annual Leadership Skills Training Program for Chief Residents |

CHICAGO, December 1, 2010 – The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education is proud to announce five experiential learning workshops for incoming (“rising”) chief residents. The three-day workshops will be held this spring and summer in Chicago, Illinois (two workshops); Jacksonville, Florida; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Redondo Beach, California. |

ACGME honors outstanding program and institutional coordinators |

CHICAGO, November 1, 2010 – The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has chosen five program coordinators to receive the 2011 Graduate Medical Education Program Coordinator Excellence Award and one institutional coordinator to receive the 2011 GME Institutional Coordinator Excellence Award. The annual awards honor coordinators, who provide administrative support to residency programs and sponsoring institutions. The awardees were chosen from among numerous nominations submitted by program directors, designated institutional officials and residents. They were selected based on their excellent communication skills, knowledge of the accreditation process, and efforts to improve residency programs. |

ACGME honors residents and resident teams with 2011 David C. Leach, MD, Award |

CHICAGO, November 1, 2010 – The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has chosen five residents and resident teams to receive the 2011 David C. Leach, MD, Award. The ACGME gives the award annually to residents and teams of residents who have helped improve residency programs by developing projects to foster innovation, improve communication, or advance humanism in patient care. The honorees were chosen from nominations submitted by people who work closely with residents, program directors, coordinators, faculty members and designated institutional officials. The award is named after Dr. David Leach, the ACGME’s former chief executive officer, who retired in 2007. |

ACGME announces 2011 Parker J. Palmer Courage to Lead Award honorees |

CHICAGO, November 1, 2010 – The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has chosen three institutional leaders of graduate medical education as the 2011 Parker J. Palmer Courage to Lead Award honorees. The ACGME gives the Courage to Lead Award annually to three designated institutional officials (DIOs), who are the administrators responsible for all graduate medical education programs at a sponsoring institution. One award is given to a DIO in each of three categories; small hospital, large hospital and academic medical center. The award is named after Parker J. Palmer, PhD, author of The Courage to Teach and several other books on teaching and vocation. |

The annual award is given to 10 outstanding program directors, who are honored for their commitment to teaching and their innovative and effective teaching methods. The awardees were selected from among numerous program directors nominated by faculty members, designated institutional officials and residents. The award is named after Parker J. Palmer, PhD, a noted sociologist and teacher who wrote The Courage to Teach and other books on teaching and vocation. |

to Ensure Excellent Resident Education and Quality Patient Care

CHICAGO, September 28, 2010 – The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Board of Directors has approved a set of requirements that are a comprehensive approach to patient care, quality improvement, supervision, professionalism, transitions in care, and resident well-being. Included are graduated standards for duty hours for the nation's 111,000 residents training in ACGME accredited teaching institutions. The new standards will go into effect in July 2011. |

CHICAGO, September 2, 2010 – The Academic Year 2009-2010 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Data Resource Book–featuring a new section with graphs illustrating statistical trends over the past decade– is now available on the ACGME website. CHICAGO, May 7, 2010 – In years to come, the public will demand a greater voice in how resident physicians are educated and physicians will focus even more on evidence-based medicine when treating patients with various health conditions, said Carolyn M. Clancy, MD, director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, during the keynote speech she gave March 6 at the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s 2010 Annual Educational Conference. The meeting took place March 4-7 at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee. About 1,600 program directors, program coordinators, designated institutional officials and others involved in graduate medical education attended the event. |

Ten posters chosen for oral presentation at 2010 ACGME Annual Educational Conference |

CHICAGO, April 30, 2010 – Nearly 200 posters were submitted to the 2010 Marvin R. Dunn Poster Session, which was held March 5 during the 2010 ACGME Annual Educational Conference. The posters summarized projects focusing on innovations in transitions of care, teaching and assessing the general competencies, using the milestones to guide program improvement, and innovations in the learning environment.
