The ACGME Honors Ten Educators with the First Parker J. Palmer "Courage to Teach" Award

Rosemont, IL, February 11, 2002 - The ACGME in Chicago, Illinois. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), responsible for evaluating and accrediting residency programs in the United States, selected ten residency program directors for the Parker J. Palmer "Courage to Teach" Award. This is the first award of its kind given to program directors by the ACGME. The award was presented to ten program directors at a special awards dinner at the Hotel Sofitel in Rosemont, Illinois on February 11, 2002. The ten recipients are: Robert W. Block, M.D. (Tulsa, OK), Virginia U. Collier, M.D. (Newark, DE), George C. Curry, M.D. (Dallas, TX), Alfred D. Fleming, M.D. (Omaha, NE), William H. Hester, M.D. (Florence, SC), Earl D. Kemp, M.D. (Sioux Falls, SD), Gail A. McGuinness, M.D. (Iowa City, IA), Claude H. Organ, Jr., M.D. (Oakland, CA), Keith D. Wrenn, M.D. (Nashville, TN), and Nikitas J. Zervanos, M.D. (Lancaster, PA). Photographs and information about the award recipients may be found on the ACGME web site at www.acgme.org.

"The ACGME recognizes that program directors face many challenges in administering a residency program. Those finding innovative ways to teach residents and to provide quality health care in this harsh environment should be celebrated," says David C. Leach, M.D., ACGME, Executive Director, and himself a former program director.

Parker J. Palmer is a highly respected writer and traveling teacher who works independently on issues in education, community, spirituality, and social change. He is author of the book "The Courage to Teach," and whose promotion of the concept of "living divided no more" has proven relevant to teaching in academic health centers.

Criterion for selection included a demonstrated commitment to education with evidence of successful mentoring, program development, and improvement.
