Nominators had this to say:

My interest in cytology was strong before I began my fellowship, but grew exponentially under the aegis of Dr. Cibas. He has a gentle but firm manner of instructing. It became clear early in my fellowship that each cytology case is not just the means to an end. Dr. Cibas views each case as a potential advocate for cytology. He emphasizes the importance of fostering a good relationship with clinicians, radiologists, as well as other surgical pathologists, and shows by example how that should be done on a daily basis. Fellows are expected to be academicians, balancing clinical work, teaching residents and students, and working on research projects.

Again, more than any other fellowship I have been involved with, cytology has given me a framework for what academic cytology and surgical pathology should be, and as someone who is about to embark on an academic career, I am immensely grateful to Dr. Cibas for structuring his fellowship in this way. I bounce into Dr. Cibas' office frequently to ask him questions or to share an anecdote about an FNA, and it now occurs to me how unusual it is to have a productive, hard-working Director of Cytology, who passionately works on the new edition of his book, writes countless papers, and speaks at national and international meetings, who also has the time to leave his door wide open to his trainees and staff.

I can't emphasize enough how much Dr. Cibas has been such a tremendous role model to me. I know that others who rotate only for a short while are also struck by his passion for cytology, his delight in teaching, and his respect for medicine. He is truly an inspiration and I feel extremely fortunate to have worked with him
