Nominators had this to say:

For residents in our program, Dr. Montague's educational influence starts early. As junior residents, we spend our first few months on Dr. Montague's service. He is the archetypal surgeon-instructor in the operating room as he maintains high technical standards in a low-stress environment. He has an uncanny ability to explain procedures and instruct with a touch of humor such that we remember his lessons. In fact, many of our graduated chief residents still recall Dr. Montague's lessons and anecdotes from their first days of operating with him. His vast experience in the field provides us (and our junior attendings) with a unique perspective of urology.

Serving as an oral examiner of the American Urological Association, he consistently emphasizes teaching points needed to pass the boards during operative or clinical cases. His passion for teaching in the operating room, on the wards, and in his clinic instills in us a high standard for technical skill, knowledge, and compassionate patient care. Furthermore, his seemingly endless supply of urology jokes and trivia always keep the atmosphere productive and enjoyable.

Dr. Karl Montague has demonstrated a life-long commitment to the field of urologic education both at the local level and nationally. He has had a significant impact on the careers of almost 100 urology residents during his tenure as teacher, mentor, and program director, and their letters of support attest to the high regard in which he has held. Karl has also helped to ensure the excellence of all surgical training programs at Cleveland Clinic in his capacity as Chair of Surgical Education Subcommittee. His dedication to educational excellence administratively and personally stands as a model for us all. I can think of no one more deserving of this prestigious honor.
