Nominators had this to say:

Dr. Welling truly represents a role model in the field of surgical education. He has believed, lived, and taken actions over his 33 years in surgical education to stay on the forefront and has always strived to adapt to the times. His leadership in the field is well-documented by the many positions he has held in academic organizations and in his interactions with countless other program directors across the country. It is his willingness to listen to the issues, and then act on a larger scale that defines his leadership. His interests lie not only in maintaining a strong residency program locally, but nationally, and has thus influenced many important changes in residency education over the years on a national level.

I believe Dr. Welling's leadership filters down through the attending staff as well as the senior surgical residents and creates an environment that makes teaching, learning, and patient care the utmost important objective. I have always experienced Dr. Welling as a strong resident advocate and I think that in order for a program to be successful, a leader must have this quality.

Dr. Welling wears many hats and for each of them he dedicates a significant amount of time and energy, yet his primary mission has always remained the furthering of medical education for the benefit of his residents. We have been lucky to have a program director that has shown such incredible concern for his residents. We can assure you that this dedication will continue to have a great affect on many of us, long after we have left this program.
