Preface

Teaching from a Competency Perspective: An Instructional Toolbox for Graduate Medical Education (ITGME) is an online educational resource that describes and illustrates the principles and practices of competency-based education when specifically applied to teaching and learning activities for the ACGME General Competencies.

The ITGME includes a general introduction that presents characteristics of competency-based education and a set of instructional modules. Each module describes a specific instructional approach, method, or strategy and how it incorporates the principles of competency-based education. Examples demonstrate specific applications of the method to residency education and identify learning objectives related to one or more General Competencies. Teaching tips highlight recommended practices.

We recommend that you begin by reading the introduction. Afterwards, the modules can be perused in any order. Clicking on embedded links provides access to definitions, diagrams, and websites.

This project began as a collaboration of Christine Taylor PhD and the ACGME staff. We now extend to you the invitation to participate in this collaboration by developing new modules or examples. Please see the section on “Contributing to the Toolbox” for further details.

Last, our purpose is to provide a useful resource to medical educators. We will greatly appreciate receiving your comments and suggestions.
