The ACGME is delighted to announce the 2022 Annual Educational Conference Marvin R. Dunn Keynote Address and Closing Plenary speakers, two dynamic and engaging presenters whose messages will resonate with the entire graduate medical education (GME) community during these challenging times.

Marvin R. Dunn Keynote Address
Dr. Holly Humphrey, MD, MACP, president of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, will present the Marvin R. Dunn Keynote Address: Out of Adversity: Transforming Graduate Medical Education.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted and exacerbated historical fault lines and opened new chasms in the medical education ecosystem, creating an urgent need for reform. Dr. Humphrey’s talk will explore areas where the current crisis has led to a breakdown in the ability to live up to what is owed to learners, and outline strategies necessary to address these failures. Dr. Humphrey will highlight key areas where GME can enhance diversity, equity, and a sense of belonging for all, as well as build high performing teams to meet the needs of patients and help all team members navigate ethical dilemmas and moral injury. Dr. Humphrey will use the painful experiences of an ongoing pandemic to outline a path forward on behalf of current and future generations of learners in GME.

Dr. Humphrey became the eighth president of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation—the only national foundation dedicated solely to improving the education of health professionals—in July 2018. Previously, she served for 15 years as the Ralph W. Gerard Medicine and dean for medical education at the University of Chicago. Following an internal medicine residency, pulmonary and critical care fellowship, and chief residency, all in the department of medicine at the University of Chicago, she served for 14 years as director of the internal medicine residency program. Her signature programs in medical education have focused on diversity and inclusion, mentoring, and professional identity formation. Her teaching honors include selection as a favorite faculty teacher by graduating University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine students more than 25 times.

Closing Plenary
Dr. Oluwaferanmi Okanlami, MD, MS, assistant professor, family medicine/physical medicine and rehabilitation/urology, Michigan Medicine, and director of Student Accessibility and Accommodation Services at the University of Michigan, will present the 2022 Closing Plenary with his talk entitled, Disabusing Disability and Redefining Race: Intersectionality in GME.

As a disabled, black, Nigerian, immigrant, cis-gender, heterosexual, male, physician, athlete, and director, Dr. Okanlami will discuss his own struggle to define - and at times defend - his personal and professional identity through a framework of intersectionality. He will strive to demonstrate that disability is not inability by encouraging the audience to allow people to demonstrate what they can do, rather than attempting to limit them based on what they can’t. His discussion also hopes to engage the audience in conversation about what each of us can do, within our own spheres of influence, to make sure we are not perpetuating ableism, racism, or any other-isms in our personal and professional lives.

“Dr. O” was born in Nigeria before immigrating to the US at a young age. At Stanford University, he ran track and field, serving as captain his last two seasons and achieving Academic All American recognition. He went on to earn a master’s degree in engineering, science, and technology entrepreneurship from the University of Notre Dame, and completed his family medicine residency at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana. Nationally, Dr. Okanlami serves as the Disability Issues representative on the Steering Committee for the Group on Diversity and Inclusion at the Association of American Medical Colleges, sits on the National Medical Association’s Council on Medical Legislation, and was selected by the White House Office of Public Engagement to participate in the Health Equity Leaders Roundtable Series dedicated to exploring perspectives around access to care.

The 2022 Annual Educational Conference will be completely virtual again this year, allowing participants to connect and learn in a flexible way that fits their schedule. The Keynote and Closing Plenary will both stream during the conference, and will be available on demand after streaming ends.
