Journal of Graduate Medical Education Articles of the Week

“Patients Are the People Who Teach Me the Most”: Exploring the Development of Communication Skills During Internal Medicine Residency
Gabriel Burke, MD; Lindsay Melvin, MD, MHPE; Shiphra Ginsburg, MD, MEd, PhD
High-quality physician-patient communication is associated with positive health outcomes and improving quality of life. Yet there is scant literature exploring learners’ perspectives on why they remain concerned about deficiencies in their communication training. This study sought, through semi-structured interviews with internal medicine residents, to understand learners’ perspectives on the development of their communication skills.

Transactional Competence, Reliability, and Trustworthiness: Essential Attributes of the Successful Program Director
Donna A. Caniano, MD, FACS, FAAP; Carol A. Bernstein, MD; Wallace Carter, MD; Stephen Ray Mitchell, MD, MBA, MACP, FRCP; Thomas J. Nasca, MD, MACP
This ACGME News and Views article makes the case that trustworthiness in a program director, as viewed by the residents/fellows, is an essential element of a well-functioning GME program. Using examples from actual program evaluations, it explores the trusting relationships that are essential for an effective GME program and discusses circumstances where trust, or distrust, was present between program directors and learners.
