John Madara, MD wanted to find a way to improve incoming residents’ ability to identify and mitigate patient safety hazards, address these hazards through teamwork and collaboration, and report safety events using an online event reporting system. Dr. Madara, the chief fellow in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, worked with others to create an interactive, competitive “escape room” themed environment to stimulate learning and teamwork. His poster, Patient Safety Escape!: Engaging Residents in Patient Safety Education and Event Reporting, reports on the activity and its effectiveness in teaching residents about patient safety and online reporting procedures.

Anita Akbar Ali, MD’s poster, Child Abuse Curriculum for Anesthesiology Residents, presented at the 2020 ACGME Annual Educational Conference, reports on the knowledge, attitude, confidence, and commitment residents had about reporting child abuse before and after participating in the curriculum.

2021 Parker J. Palmer Courage to Lead Awardee Deborah M. DeMarco, MD is the senior associate dean for clinical affairs, associate dean for GME, and designated institutional official (DIO) at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She specializes in rheumatology.

ACGME President and CEO Dr. Thomas J. Nasca joins NAM President Dr. Victor J. Dzau in encouraging others to join NAM’s new initiative to mobilize all health sector organizations and accelerate the national climate and health movement. 

Lynne Kirk, MD, MACP will join the ACGME to lead efforts related to the review of residency and fellowship programs. She will begin this new position in September.

A recent study published in JAMA Surgery revealed that “ACGME Milestone ratings of “graduating vascular surgeons may be predictive of those surgeons’ risk-adjusted patient outcomes in their early career following a common vascular operation.”
