To provide clarity for trainees and programs during this extraordinary time, the ABMS and ACGME offer the following statement of joint principles and will continue to address ongoing developments.

During a Featured Plenary at #ACGME2023 entitled Preparing Learners to Care for Patients and Communities Experiencing Substance Use Disorder, Charlene M. Dewey, MD, MEd, FACP, Stephen Loyd, MD, and Jeanette Tetrault, MD, FACP, FASAM discussed their unique experiences in treating and creating learning environments for physicians and other care practitioners to treat substance use disorder (SUD).

The proposed revisions to Section VI of its Common Program Requirements are open for public comment over the next 45 days. The Requirements provide uniform standards for all accredited US residency and fellowship programs.

This four-year initiative is designed to promote transformative improvement within the clinical learning environments of ACGME-accredited Sponsoring Institutions in which resident and fellow physicians pursue their formal clinical training education.
