For several years, the ACGME has engaged with educators and clinical leaders to strengthen nutrition education and training in graduate medical education (GME). The ACGME’s March 2023 Summit on Medical Education in Nutrition outlined goals for integrating nutrition into GME, proposed a framework for future competencies, and identified opportunities for amplifying nutrition education across the medical education continuum.
Building upon these efforts, the ACGME is taking concrete steps to operationalize and enhance physician competencies related to nutrition across specialties. This will involve developing competency-aligned learning objectives and assessment approaches that are appropriate across educational settings, along with implementation strategies that respect program autonomy while promoting consistency in core outcomes for residents and fellows in direct care specialties.
The ACGME Board of Directors has commissioned a task force that will provide oversight and guidance as the organization works to fulfill these commitments, while ensuring accountability via updates to the Board. The Task Force members are:
