ACGME Releases 2024-2025 Statistics on Graduate Medical Education Programs and Resident Physicians

January 22, 2026

The ACGME is pleased to announce that the 2024-2025 Data Resource Book, as well as new self-service resources are now both available. The ACGME evaluated the Data Resource Book process and considered feedback and requests from the community to publish the book in its current form one final time. Moving forward, this information will be accessible in near-real-time format on ACGME Cloud | Analytics.

2024-2025 Trends
During 2024-2025, there were 13,762 ACGME-accredited programs, of which 5,380 were specialty programs (which includes medically related programs) and 7,024 were subspecialty programs. A total of 12,404 programs had a status of Continued Accreditation. Four hundred fifty-seven programs were newly accredited during the academic year, 71 more than the previous year. Fifty-one programs had a Withdrawal of Accreditation status, which includes closed programs or programs which voluntarily withdrew their accreditation as of the end of the academic year.

There were 167,083 active residents and fellows, with 137,432 (82.3%) in specialty programs and 29,651 (17.7%) in subspecialty programs. Of the 137,432 active residents and fellows in specialty programs, 57.8% are US allopathic medical school graduates, 22.5% are international medical school graduates, and 19.6% are US osteopathic medical school graduates. There are 58 graduates from Canadian medical schools, and 84 residents’ or fellows’ medical school is unknown.

Moving to ACGME Cloud
The transition from the static Data Resource Book to ACGME Cloud will allow the ACGME to introduce self-service resources and tools in the ACGME Cloud | Analytics product. Going forward, these data will be exclusively available in ACGME Cloud | Analytics – Explore Public Data. It is the ACGME’s intention with this decision to secure access, allow for more timely publishing of the data, and optimize resource efficiency.

Access the 2024-2025 Data Resource Book on the ACGME website
