At the 2021 ACGME Annual Educational Conference, Athena Gonzalez and her team presented their poster, Strategies for Optimizing Fit Testing for Residents and the Evolving Role of the Program Coordinator, about their work in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure residents were wearing properly sized and fitted masks and respirators, even as supplies changed.

With 145 sessions, 300+ speakers, and numerous networking and learning opportunities, we want to be sure to highlight key must-attend sessions. Two of these are the Marvin R. Dunn Keynote Address on Friday and the new Closing Plenary on Saturday afternoon.

ACGME President and CEO Dr. Nasca kicked off his Saturday morning session at the Annual Educational Conference with some “non-rhetorical” questions: Can anyone predict what the health care system will look like in 2035? Can anyone predict how long your residents will practice? 40 years?

After stumping the room, he went on to explain that it is our job is to prepare residents to practice in the future—not to arm them with practices, skills, and knowledge of the present. We want our residents to be prepared not just for 2018 but for 2035—and beyond.

2021 Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Awardee David A. Wininger, MD is the internal medicine residency program director at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He specializes in infectious disease.

The ACGME is pleased to introduce Paige E. Manz, MBA as its new Chief of Staff, effective today, and following a national search. As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, Paige will report to ACGME President and CEO Debra F. Weinstein, MD, and work directly with her to oversee, prioritize, and facilitate key organizational projects and processes in collaboration with ACGME Department Chiefs.

The ACGME has developed a process to allow accredited programs to request Program Emergency Categorization when planned resident/fellow experiences are disrupted due to a local epidemic/pandemic surge.

On August 7, 2019, Ohio Valley Medical Center (OVMC) in Wheeling, West Virginia informed its employees it would close in 60 to 90 days. OVMC is a participating site for ACGME-accredited emergency medicine and internal medicine residency programs.
