On August 7, 2019, Ohio Valley Medical Center (OVMC) in Wheeling, West Virginia informed its employees that it would close in 60 to 90 days. OVMC is a participating site for ACGME-accredited emergency medicine and internal medicine residency programs under the institutional sponsorship of Mountain State Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institutions (MSOPTI).
The ACGME has invoked its Extraordinary Circumstances Policy (ACGME Policies and Procedures, Section 21.00). According to that policy, “Within 10 days of the invocation of the Extraordinary Circumstances policy, the designated institutional official, or designee(s), of each affected Sponsoring Institution must contact the ACGME to receive the timelines the ACGME has established for its programs. These timelines will establish deadlines for the Sponsoring Institution(s) to:
(1) submit program reconfigurations to the ACGME; and,
(2) inform each program’s residents of the decision to reconstitute the program and/or transfer the residents either temporarily or permanently.”
The ACGME facilitates accreditation considerations that make it possible for residents and fellows to transfer to other programs. The ACGME is not directly involved in resident or fellow placement or decisions related to funding. Residents and fellows should contact their program directors and/or designated institutional official (DIO) with any questions about the transfer process.
The ACGME is acutely aware of the uncertainty and stress that this situation has caused, and our thoughts are with the residents, faculty and staff members, patients and community at large during this difficult time.
