During their presentation “Using Public Data to Follow Graduates into Practice,” at the 2019 Annual Educational Conference, Marc M. Triola, MD and Patrick M. Cocks, MD, from the NYU School of Medicine have leveraged large databases of publicly available information to help understand the patterns of health care practice and outcomes among graduates from programs once they have left the programs.

The Caribbean nation of Haiti faces unique challenges in putting its philosophy that “health care is a right” into practice. Kerling Israel, MD, MPH described the work of Partners in Health/Zanmi Lasante (PIH/ZL) to improve the nation’s health care through graduate medical education (GME), and outlined the challenges faced and progress made in her recent Baldwin Seminar Series presentation, “Improving Graduate Medical Education in Haiti through Collaborative Work.” The talk was presented April 3, 2019 at the ACGME offices in Chicago. This talk was also the first of the series to be streamed online for a live audience.

As 2019 revs up, we thought it was a good time to look ahead at what the CLER Program has lined up for the coming year.

The ACGME is committed to supporting graduate medical education programs to develop a Culture of Well-Being, not just the absence of burnout and depression. The central feature in this culture is the well-being of all members of the health care team, including faculty and staff members, and residents and fellows.

In her recent Baldwin Seminar presentation, The Impact of Adverse Events on Physicians and Residents: What Do Ethical Principles Say About Self-Care and Care of Colleagues, Dr. Joan Anzia explored psychological and physiological effects of adverse events on physicians, and what programs can do to help physicians.

Dr. Lee Francis' recent Baldwin Seminar, Training the Next Generation at Community Health Centers: Does the Apple Fall Far from the Tree?, discussed how educating residents in community health settings offers an exceptional opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of social determinants of health.
