Kicking Off National Volunteer Month

April 1, 2026

April marks National Volunteer Month, and each year, the staff at the ACGME uses the month to pause and recognize the many individuals who support the Mission of the ACGME through their service. Across the organization, volunteers play an essential role in advancing graduate medical education (GME) and, ultimately, improving patient care.

Volunteer contributions are not supplemental to the ACGME’s work, they are foundational to it. From accreditation and recognition efforts to committee and council service, advisory groups, and tasks forces, volunteers are deeply embedded in nearly every aspect of the organization. Their expertise, insights, and commitment help ensure that GME continues to meet the highest standards of quality and accountability, and that resident and fellow physicians are learning and training in high-quality, safe, and effective clinical learning environments.

The ACGME’s volunteers represent a broad range of professionals, including physicians, non-physicians, residents, fellows, educators, public representatives, and others, from across specialties, subspecialties, and experiences. Each individual brings a unique perspective that contributes to a collective effort that reflects the complexity and importance of GME. Their contributions support continuous improvement across programs and institutions, reinforcing the ACGME’s commitment to enhancing the quality of resident and fellow physicians’ education through advancements in accreditation and education.

Throughout the month of April, as we do each year, the ACGME will highlight stories and celebrate the many ways our volunteers contribute to the Mission. We at the ACGME are grateful for the dedication and generosity of our volunteers. Each contribution, whether visible or behind the scenes, plays a role in strengthening the GME community.

To all ACGME volunteers, thank you. Your time, expertise, and dedication make a meaningful and lasting difference. We couldn’t do this important work without you. We are deeply appreciative of your partnership and the vital role you play in supporting others across GME. We could not do this work without you.

Throughout the month, we encourage you to follow along on our Instagram, LinkedIn, and X accounts as we recognize some of our wonderful volunteers and share their stories!
