Opt-in status is not confirmed until programs receive correspondence in ADS of their Initial Accreditation, effective July 1, 2025. As described in the FAQs, residents or fellows who enter an unaccredited combined program after June 30, 2026, will not be considered to be enrolled in an ACGME-accredited program.

The opt-in process applies only to the combined formats being accredited by the ACGME, as listed on the Combined Programs web page. Contact the certifying boards with questions regarding other formats or the board certification eligibility of individual graduates.

Email accreditation@acgme.org with any questions or for assistance with completing the opt-in process.

Upcoming Major Revision of Program Requirements for Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

The Review Committee invites comments related to specific requirements or topics that should be addressed as revisions are developed. In particular, the Review Committee invites comments related to what the subspecialty will look like in the future, and the competencies, resources, and personnel necessary to create physicians who will practice in this subspecialty.

Changes to the ACGME Common Program Requirements are not within the purview of the Review Committee and, therefore, comments related to Common Program Requirements, indicated by bold font in the Requirements document, should not be submitted and will not be considered.

NEW! Journal of Graduate Medical Education Article of the Week

Where Does the Week Go? Parsing Trends in Program Director Workload
Margaret Turlington, MD, MS; John Newland, MD, MS; Matthew Cahn, MD; Brady Campbell, MD; Stephen M. Kavic, MD, MSHPE
This study of ACGME Data Resource Book material showed that, from 2012 to 2021, the average tenure of program directors has shortened, and the time spent on program director activities has decreased across medical specialties. Increased hours spent on clinical supervision are significantly associated with lower resident attrition rates.

Choose the Right Tool for the Task: Leveraging Developmental Interactions in Medicine
Jeremy Branzetti, MD, MHPE; Holly Caretta-Weyer, MD, MHPE; Nicole Deiorio, MD
Developmental interactions—bidirectional exchanges between two or more people causing an intentional change in behavior toward a specific outcome—come in many familiar forms in GME: teaching; advising; mentoring; coaching; sponsoring; etc. In this article, the authors review common developmental interactions within medicine and provide guidance on how a physician can deliberately and proactively leverage them to address future career challenges.
