Dr. Jordan J. Cohen explored the evolution of medical education in his presentation, “Looking at the Road Ahead through the Rearview Mirror,” as the 2018 Marvin R. Dunn Keynote speaker at last month's Annual Educational Conference, offering his unique perspective as graduate medical education (GME) leader.

As the current chair of the ACGME Board of Directors, Rowen Zetterman, MD, filled several important roles at this year’s Annual Educational Conference, presenting awards and introducing Dr. Nasca for his President and CEO Address among them. We caught up with Dr. Zetterman in between his activities to learn a little more about his experience the last few years with the ACGME and, in particular, at the Annual Educational Conference.

In an effort to increase the public’s understanding of ACGME responsibilities and graduate medical education (GME) overall, the ACGME has developed a general FAQ page to answer often asked questions and address common misconceptions.

A website has been set up to provide information and updates on the Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) Competencies initiative. The initiative aims to create a common set of foundational competencies for use in UME programs in the US and improve the transition to graduate medical education.

John Madara, MD wanted to find a way to improve incoming residents’ ability to identify and mitigate patient safety hazards, address these hazards through teamwork and collaboration, and report safety events using an online event reporting system. Dr. Madara, the chief fellow in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, worked with others to create an interactive, competitive “escape room” themed environment to stimulate learning and teamwork. His poster, Patient Safety Escape!: Engaging Residents in Patient Safety Education and Event Reporting, reports on the activity and its effectiveness in teaching residents about patient safety and online reporting procedures.

With 145 sessions, 300+ speakers, and numerous networking and learning opportunities, we want to be sure to highlight key must-attend sessions. Two of these are the Marvin R. Dunn Keynote Address on Friday and the new Closing Plenary on Saturday afternoon.
