Dr. Annie Phung is a current a PGY-1 family medicine resident at the Northwestern McGaw Family Medicine Residency at Delnor in Geneva, Illinois. She grew up in Southern California and attended the University of California, Irvine. The discipline of biological sciences invigorated her curiosities and stimulated her passion for medicine. She volunteered locally and internationally, providing care to those in need. Her passion to help others, along with spreading the curiosities and literacy of health care, propelled her journey into medicine. Immediately after college, she left the comfort of our home state and traveled to Georgia to start a graduate program in biomedical sciences at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM)-Georgia.

With the support of colleagues and faculty members, she continued her doctoral education in osteopathic medicine at PCOM-Georgia. Dr. Phung became the DO Council President at the end of her first year of medical school, serving as the main student liaison between all four cohorts of medical students and the faculty leadership and fostered a culture of transparency and open communication. She was also the PCOM-Georgia representative on the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP) of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM). She was appointed as Legislative Affairs Representative in COSGP, encouraging medical education and public health advocacy to students and working closely with the AACOM Government Relations department. While COVID-19 sprung up in the middle of her term, she adapted to the changing environment and continued sharing her passion for advocacy with other student leaders to bring back to their colleges, virtually. She was appointed to the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)’s Board of Trustees as a Student Advisor, sharing insight with organizational leaders about student opinions on the constantly changing medical education culture and COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Phung chose the field of family medicine because of the emphasis of patient advocacy, health literacy, and the importance of primary preventive care. She strives for the promotion of healthy individuals by educating her patients and their family members on diseases and treatments and aspires to serve her community, both locally and nationally, by advocating for her patients, her specialty, medical education, and health care as a whole.
