As the academic year comes to close, and I reach my six-month anniversary at the ACGME, I’m writing to share some updates, plans, and reflections.
Three key updates:
- ACGME fees will be held flat for 2026. We do this despite rising costs and significant unanticipated expenses associated with federal challenges, knowing that Sponsoring Institutions are facing unprecedented fiscal pressures while working to protect and prioritize graduate medical education (GME). Deferring a fee increase commits us not only to improving efficiency, but to making tough choices as we focus squarely on the ACGME Mission of ensuring and enhancing the quality of GME.
- Initial steps have been taken to reduce the administrative burden associated with accreditation. These include:
- Simplifying reporting of faculty scholarly activity
- Eliminating the Self-Study (already suspended for Sponsoring Institutions)
- Removing the requirement to report names of Program Evaluation Committee and Clinical Competency Committee members
- Eliminating the faculty hours reporting section from the Faculty Roster
More changes – and more substantial changes – are coming in this area.
- Efforts to strengthen engagement with GME stakeholders are also underway. The DIO Forum has resumed, communication vehicles with program directors and institutional and program coordinators will be piloted this fall, and we are getting important input from resident/fellow volunteers on our Board of Directors and committees. We are also seeking opportunities for dialogue with Sponsoring Institution executives.
Amid a range of external challenges, the ACGME will continue to strengthen accreditation while simplifying processes and reducing burden. In addition, simultaneous revision of the Common Program Requirements and the Institutional Requirements presents a rare opportunity to work with our amazing volunteers to re-frame GME standards for the future. We are also committed to reducing barriers to accreditation of new Sponsoring Institutions or programs, while maintaining high standards for the quality of GME.
I am fortunate to be part of the ACGME team and to re-immerse in the larger GME community at such a compelling time. I look forward to enhancing communication with the various groups we serve and utilizing your input. Our shared commitment to GME binds us together in working toward a better future.
With best regards,
