Strengthening Osteopathic Recognition: Insights and Innovation at #ACGME2027

November 2, 2026

The Osteopathic Recognition Full-Day Course at the 2027 ACGME Annual Educational Conference, developed by the ACGME in partnership with the Assembly of Osteopathic Graduate Medical Educators (AOGME) to offer a full day of learning, discussion, and connection to support programs with Osteopathic Recognition, as well as programs that may be considering applying for Osteopathic Recognition.

Course Overview
The course is designed for Directors of Osteopathic Education (DOEs), designated institutional officials (DIOs), faculty members, program directors, program coordinators, administrators/managers, and other graduate medical education (GME) department personnel.

Whether attendees are new to Osteopathic Recognition or experienced DOEs, the course provides opportunities to gain practical insights, exchange ideas, and strengthen connections across the Osteopathic Recognition community.

This year’s course brings together practical strategies, emerging technology, peer discussion, and updates from the ACGME, American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and AOGME. Sessions will explore how programs can strengthen their approach to Osteopathic Recognition while addressing real-world challenges faced by faculty members, program leaders, and learners.

Throughout the day, participants will hear and learn directly from DOEs, osteopathic faculty members, and designated osteopathic residents from programs with ACGME Osteopathic Recognition. Leaders and staff members of the ACGME’s Osteopathic Recognition Committee will provide insight into the recognition process and enhance attendees’ understanding of how the Osteopathic Recognition Requirements are applied.

What’s New This Year
Attendees will explore a broad range of topics related to building, enhancing, and maintaining programs with Osteopathic Recognition.

Innovation and Technology

  • From Paper to Platform: Building a Digital Ecosystem for Osteopathic Recognition will explore the development and implementation of a digital ecosystem created to support a newly established family medicine program with Osteopathic Recognition.
  • In Optimizing Evaluations for Osteopathic Recognition with AI: Working Smarter Not Harder, attendees will learn how artificial intelligence can help reduce documentation burden while allowing educators to focus their expertise on creating meaningful and relevant evaluations.

Curriculum, Assessment, and Faculty Development

  • Beyond the Checkbox: Making Osteopathic Recognition Feel Real in Residency will share practical strategies to move Osteopathic Recognition from “documented” to “felt” by embedding osteopathic principles and practice (OPP) into daily clinical teaching, assessment, and culture.
  • Building a Meaningful System of Structured Osteopathic Feedback Using Bloom's Taxonomy will examine how Bloom’s Taxonomy can be used to evaluate osteopathic competency progression and support meaningful faculty feedback.
  • Woven in, Not Added on – Curriculum Integration for Osteopathic Recognition will highlight practical strategies for integrating OPP throughout curriculum, including assessment, faculty development, and program evaluation.

Innovative Approaches to OMT Training

  • Decentralized OMT Training: Remote Training of Faculty in WWAMI will examine how an academic university and network of residency programs used cameras and technology to livestream osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) workshops from centrally located OPP labs to remote sites, increasing the number of osteopathic preceptors in the region.

Practical Guidance for Obtaining and Maintaining Osteopathic Recognition

  • An Overview of the Osteopathic Recognition Application Process will help attendees better understand the application process and required information.
  • Best Practices for Achieving and Maintaining Continued Recognition will provide strategies to help programs successfully achieve and maintain Continued Recognition.

Attendees will also get a broader look at developments across osteopathic GME, with updates from both the ACGME and AOGME on programs with Osteopathic Recognition and other information relevant to osteopathic educators.

Finally, the AOA Distinction of Advanced Osteopathic Training session will explore highlights from the AOA’s latest GME Annual Report, trends in Advanced Osteopathic Training certificate recipients, and new tools and opportunities for programs and learners through the AOA’s Emerging DO Platform.

Spark Conversations and New Ideas
Three “Spark Sessions” will facilitate small-group conversations on topics relevant to programs with Osteopathic Recognition, with the goal of “sparking” knowledge-sharing among attendees. These discussions will give participants opportunities to exchange ideas, share experiences and approaches, and learn directly from one another.

The day will conclude with an opportunity to revisit topics and key takeaways from the day.

Earn CME Credit
American Medical Association (AMA) CME credit will be provided by the ACGME and may be claimed through completion of the course evaluation.

A brief session will also provide instructions for those interested in claiming AOA 1-A CME credit for the course, which will be provided by AOGME and may be claimed through completion of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine course evaluation and attestation.
