Major Revision of the Institutional Requirements

Update Complete the Stakeholder Survey

The Institutional Review Committee (IRC) is advancing the major revision of the Institutional Requirements and has appointed a Writing Group to carry this work forward. The next steps will engage key stakeholders and invite them to think rigorously and critically about the evolving role of the Sponsoring Institution in supporting GME. The goals are to:

  1. develop a new set of requirements that will meet the needs of the clinical learning environment, DIOs, other GME personnel, and Sponsoring Institutions’ accredited programs; and
  2. to consider resources that will be needed to prepare residents and fellows for independent practice into the future. Above all, the IRC is committed to developing requirements that are outcomes-focused, achievable, and measurable.

To guide the Writing Group’s work, the following activities will be conducted:

  • The ACGME will conduct two stakeholder surveys on key issues relevant to the evolving landscape of Sponsoring Institutions:
  • Survey 1 (open now through September 5) addresses: DIO and Institutional Coordinator Roles, and Oversight - click here to access this survey.
  • Survey 2 (scheduled for August 18-September 19) will address: Resident/Fellow Forum and Sponsoring Institution Size Adaptation - The release will be announced in a future e-Communication.
Take Survey 1
  • The ACGME will engage a consultant to conduct research aimed at introducing into the requirement development process the perspectives of senior administrators of Sponsoring Institutions (e.g., C-suite executives, deans), DIOs, current residents and fellows, and physicians who recently completed their GME programs.
  • The ACGME will facilitate a literature review on topics relevant to Sponsoring Institutions, now and in the future.
  • The ACGME will hold a Stakeholder Summit on October 8-9 to discuss keys issues relevant to the evolving landscape of Sponsoring Institutions.

This work will continue through the remainder of the calendar year and the ACGME will seek nominations to participate in key activities to ensure that a wide variety of Sponsoring Institution voices are heard.

Email questions to Director, Sponsoring Institution Projects Katharina Wang.
