ACGME e-Communication - August 1, 2022

Notice Regarding Annual Update Questions

It has come to our attention that some of the COVID-related questions included in the Annual Update for programs are overly intrusive and may be considered personal health information. While this was an attempt to understand the impact of the pandemic on ACGME-accredited programs and out of concern for program directors, we apologize for asking these questions and have removed them from the Annual Update. The responses to the three questions related to the program director’s health that have already been collected will be removed from the database and destroyed. Once again, the ACGME sincerely apologizes for any concerns these questions have caused.

To clarify, the ACGME deleted the three questions specifically related to COVID-19 and the program director. The aggregate questions about residents and faculty members whose health has been personally affected by COVID-19 remain, and these have been asked for the last three years. These data are mainly collected so the ACGME can understand aspects of the impact of COVID-19 on the GME community to assist with planning on how best to support programs and institutions.

AuduBon-Bons: Bite-Sized Learning for Residents in the Ambulatory Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic
Elizabeth M. Will, MD; Chloe L. Altchek, MD; Hemangi P. Shukla, DO; Rini B. Ratan, MD
While most medical education happens in the inpatient setting, the majority of medicine is practiced in the outpatient setting. The authors of this article created an ambulatory curriculum, comprising short modules delivered in the clinic during the first 15 minutes of every half-day clinic session. Modules were delivered using a flipped classroom format with pre-session assignments. In post-intervention surveys, participants demonstrated an increase in confidence and comfort levels in readiness for practice in the outpatient setting.

It Is All I Know
Jayashree Raikhelkar, MD
An anesthesiology and critical care specialist working as a tele-intensivist covering intensive care units across the country during a COVID-19 surge writes about the struggles of watching residents from afar as they work to keep complex patients alive. Sometimes, the author writes, the best you can do is offer emotional support and let them know they are doing a great job.
