A variety of sessions and activities for those interested in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) topics will be available throughout the 2024 ACGME Annual Educational Conference. We’ve listed some highlights in this area that we hope will help make your #ACGME2024 planning easier. The sessions included in this post have been identified by their title and description by the ACGME’s DEI team as possible additional sessions of interest for those looking for content in this area; note that sessions with an asterisk were not self-identified by the speakers as DEI-focused and therefore will not come up as such when filtering by the topic of DEI in the conference session schedule.
Supporting the Local LGBTQIA+ Community
During open registration hours on the evening of Wednesday, March 6, ACGME conference attendees can donate books of inspiration or other wish list items for homeless and at-risk LGBTQIA+ youth in the local Orlando community. Cards from a local minority-owned business will be available to be completed with words of encouragement from conference attendees.
On Thursday, March 7 during the Marvin R. Dunn Welcome Reception and Exhibitor Kick-Off, in the Exhibit Hall, conference attendees can participate in an interactive art piece that will be donated to Zebra Youth, an Orlando organization providing programs and services designed to meet the unique needs of homeless and at-risk LGBTQIA+ youth.
ACGME Paving the Path to Medicine
The ACGME is pleased to partner with the Orlando Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare System and University of Central Florida College of Medicine for a community-centered event at the Orlando VA on March 7, 2024, in conjunction with the conference. In lieu of participating in a Full-Day Course, conference attendees who volunteered will gain first-hand experience in a pathway program that volunteers can replicate at their own institution for a lasting impact on diversifying the physician workforce.
In this program, ACGME Paving the Path to Medicine: Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, local college students from communities underrepresented in medicine will learn about careers in medicine, chat with medical education faculty members, and participate in simulation activities.
While the program is now full, conference attendees can get more information about creating a pathway program at their own institution by visiting the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion table in the ACGME Hub in the Exhibit Hall throughout the conference.
Honoring ACGME Award Winners
Throughout the conference and at a special dinner, the 2024 Barbara Ross-Lee, DO Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award winners and all other ACGME award winners will be honored and celebrated. The Barbara Ross-Lee, DO Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award recognizes efforts to achieve DEI in the graduate medical education (GME) community. This award celebrates initiatives in which diverse learners are developed, diverse faculties are constructed, and the GME community embraces differences and highlights them as examples of what is achievable. We are currently accepting nominations for the 2025 Awards cycle through Wednesday, March 27.

- Full-Day Course (FDC005): Program and Institutional Strategies for Inclusive Learning Environments
This Full-Day Course is designed for graduate medical education and DEI leaders interested in learning skills and strategies for increasing resident, fellow, and faculty member recruitment and retention, as well as creating inclusive environments. Participants will understand the intersection of trauma and DEI work; learn strategies for developing organizational capacity while managing resistance; learn how to effectively use the published resources in the forthcoming ACGME Equity Matters® Resource Collection; and apply knowledge in small-group strategy sessions.
