NEW! Resources for Sponsoring Institutions

The ACGME has created resources to help DIOs and institutional coordinators prepare for changes they will see in ADS this coming academic year. Beginning July 1, 2023, DIOs and institutional coordinators will see updated taxonomy fields for Sponsoring Institutions and participating sites that they will be required to complete during next year's Annual Update.

Some new indicators have been added to the institutional list of participating sites, including the “not in use” and the blue “star” icons.

  • The “not in use” indicator identifies a Sponsoring Institution’s participating sites that are not currently listed in their sponsored programs’ list of participating sites. These sites should be removed from the Sponsoring Institution’s list of participating sites if they will not be used by program(s).
  • The “star” indicator identifies the participating sites to which the Sponsoring Institution sends the largest number of programs. As of July 1, 2023, DIOs and institutional coordinators are responsible for updating the participating site type, ownership/control type, and Chief Executive Officer information of their Sponsoring Institution’s “most used” participating sites. Note: it is possible for a Sponsoring Institution to have multiple starred sites.

Additional resources to prepare for these changes include:

ACGME staff members will review these changes at two upcoming open Zoom meetings:

  • THIS THURSDAY, June 22 at 3:30 p.m. Central
  • Tuesday, June 27 at 1:00 p.m. Central
Zoom ID: 953 6303 9101 (ID is linked; same for both time slots)

Office hours will be scheduled throughout this year's Annual Update period. Stay tuned to the weekly e-Communication for details.

NEW! Program Requirements for Urology

As noted above, the ACGME Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Urology effective July 1, 2023 are now available under Program Requirements, FAQs, and Applications in the Urology section of the ACGME website. Some programs will need time to secure additional support to comply with the new requirement for minimum program coordinator full-time equivalent support, so the Review Committee determined that this requirement will not be subject to citation until July 1, 2024.

Email questions to Executive Director Kathleen Quinn-Leering.

Complex Family Planning Case Log Update

Two updates to the ACGME Case Log System for complex family planning: fellows can now “batch enter” CPT code 59821; fellows can discontinue use of the “Inpatient” checkbox as it will be removed this summer.

The "Case Log Instructions: Complex Family Planning" document has been updated under Documents and Resources in the Obstetrics and Gynecology section of the ACGME website. Program directors and coordinators are advised to review the document, particularly the revised description of a complex induced abortion by dilation and curettage, which was expanded to include inpatients.

Email questions to Executive Director Kathleen Quinn-Leering.

Update on Proposed Revisions to Program Requirements for Pediatrics

A major revision of the Program Requirements for Pediatrics is currently underway. In accordance with ACGME policy, the proposed revisions were posted for Review and Comment in February, and the comment period closed April 5, 2023.

In response to a significant number of comments received, including several concerns about the proposed revisions, the Review Committee for Pediatrics has decided to conduct a more comprehensive and detailed review of the proposed revisions and comments and issue a second public comment period expected for late summer. Due to this extension, the proposed requirements are now anticipated to go into effect July 1, 2025.

Specific timing and details will be shared through the e-Communication.

NEW! Journal of Graduate Medical Education (JGME) Call for Papers: Climate and GME Supplement

In 2021, the World Health Organization declared climate change to be “the single biggest health threat facing humanity.” Many social and environmental determinants of health, including clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient food, and secure shelter, have been seriously affected in many parts of the world. Those with climate-sensitive health risks, particularly in low-income and disadvantaged parts of the world, have already felt the direct effects of heat waves, floods, low air quality, and food disruptions, as well as effects on their mental health.

The editors of JGME know future physicians need to be prepared to care for patients who will face these issues. When searching published literature, however, they have found few examples of educational tools related to climate change and GME. To address this gap and enhance access to climate-related resources for GME, the editors have issued a Call for Papers on Climate and GME for a supplement to be published in late 2024. Submissions are due January 15, 2024.

Read the Call for Papers

When submitting a manuscript, Editor in Chief Gail Sullivan, MD, MPH and the supplement’s editors have the following advice:

  1. Think broadly about the intersection of GME and issues around climate change. The examples listed in the Call for Papers are not the only possibilities, but are there to help frame the possible scope of ideas.
  2. Read JGME’s Instructions for Authors carefully. They provide guidance on the range of article types and specific instructions on structure and format.
  3. Ask questions early! Email jgme@acgme.org if uncertain about the applicability of a submission or to discuss how the submission might fit a specific article type.
