UPDATED! Annual Update Schedule and Resources
The 2023-2024 Academic Year Accreditation Data System (ADS) Annual Update will be collected between July and September 2023, and programs will receive an initial notification email at the beginning of the reporting timeframe noting all Annual Update requirements and respective deadlines.
Each program’s Annual Update timeframe will appear in ADS under the Program > Important Dates column on the right-hand side by July 1.
Due to the limited number of changes to this year's Annual Update, a webinar will not be offered to program leadership this year. Instead, a 2023-2024 Summary of Changes article is available in the Annual Update section of the ADS Help Center with several resources, including:
- A document with what programs need to know for the 2023-2024 ADS Annual Update
- A summary of changes to ADS Annual Update common questions
- A frequently asked questions document.
Note: COVID-19 data will not be collected and this section will be removed from ADS.

2023 National Learning Community of Sponsoring Institutions Meeting Registration
Registration is open for the National Learning Community of Sponsoring Institutions meeting. Designed specifically for designated institutional officials (DIOs) and institutional leaders, the meeting will convene in Chicago and online September 19-20, 2023.
The meeting will provide unique opportunities for shared learning and peer support; foster community building among Sponsoring Institutions; and present a venue in which Sponsoring Institutions can collaborate, share successful practices to strengthen clinical learning environments, and solve challenges.

NEW! Vascular Surgery Designated as Specialty
At the June 2023 ACGME Board of Directors meeting, the Board approved a proposal designating vascular surgery as its own specialty. This change, effective July 1, 2023, mirrors the status that vascular surgery has with the American Board of Medical Specialties. The ACGME's website and data structures are being updated to reflect this change.
There will be no functional change in Review Committee processes; vascular surgery programs will continue to be reviewed by the Review Committee for Surgery, and the vascular surgery community will continue to have representation on that Review Committee.

UPDATED! Resources for Sponsoring Institutions
The ACGME has created resources to help DIOs and institutional coordinators prepare for changes they will see in ADS this coming academic year. Beginning July 1, 2023, DIOs and institutional coordinators will see updated taxonomy fields for Sponsoring Institutions and participating sites that they will be required to complete during next year's Annual Update.
Some new indicators have been added to the institutional list of participating sites, including the “not in use” and the blue “star” icons.
- The “not in use” indicator identifies a Sponsoring Institution’s participating sites that are not currently listed in their sponsored programs’ list of participating sites. These sites should be removed from the Sponsoring Institution’s list of participating sites if they will not be used by program(s).
- The “star” indicator identifies the participating sites to which the Sponsoring Institution sends the largest number of programs. As of July 1, 2023, DIOs and institutional coordinators are responsible for updating the participating site type, ownership/control type, and Chief Executive Officer information of their Sponsoring Institution’s “most used” participating sites. Note: it is possible for a Sponsoring Institution to have multiple starred sites.

Colon and Rectal Surgery Update
The Review Committee redeveloped the Report Form for Institutional Data for submitting requests for complement increases and participating site changes. The updated form is available under Documents and Resources in the Colon and Rectal Surgery section of the ACGME website.

Program Requirements for Urology
The ACGME Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Urology effective July 1, 2023 are now available under Program Requirements, FAQs, and Applications in the Urology section of the ACGME website. Some programs will need time to secure additional support to comply with the new requirement for minimum program coordinator full-time equivalent support, so the Review Committee determined that this requirement will not be subject to citation until July 1, 2024.

DEADLINE FRIDAY! ACGME Seeks Transitional Year Review Committee Members
The Transitional Year Review Committee is looking for two new physician members. Candidates must be certified in anesthesiology or surgery through an American Board of Medical Specialties or American Osteopathic Association member board.
Nominations are due by July 1, 2023. The Review Committee will forward its selections to the ACGME Board of Directors for approval. Terms begin July 1, 2024 and end June 30, 2030.

ACGME Seeks Osteopathic Recognition Committee Member
The Osteopathic Recognition Committee is seeking one new physician member. Candidates must be a Director of Osteopathic Education in a program with Osteopathic Recognition.
Nominations are due August 1, 2023. The Recognition Committee will forward its selections to the ACGME Board of Directors for approval. The new member’s term will begin July 1, 2024 and end June 30, 2030.

ACGME Seeks Public Member
The following Review Committee seeks its next public member for a six-year term beginning July 1, 2024. Public members share the perspective of the public, foster public accountability, enrich the work of the Review Committee through outside expertise, and create transparency. While nominees cannot be physicians, other health care professionals are permitted if they are not employed by an organization with ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship programs.

Anticipated Impact of Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization on Training of Residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology: A Qualitative Analysis

The authors sought to qualitatively explore the anticipated impacts of the Dobbs ruling on education and training in obstetrics and gynecology. They identified eight themes of potential impact on current and future education: competency; provision of reproductive health care; residency selection; inequity in training; alternative training; law-based versus evidence-based medicine; morality and ethics; and uncertainty about next steps.
