Shaping GME | Call for Comments
Every 10 years, Review Committees are required to review their specialty Program Requirements to determine necessary revisions. The ACGME Board of Directors has approved a new process for all such major revisions going forward.
The process convened specialty-specific writing groups, who, along with members of the specialty community and leaders from other specialties and related fields, rigorously and creatively considered what the specialty will look like in the future (recognizing that the future is marked with significant uncertainty). Out of this process, the Writing Group will draft and propose revisions to the Program Requirements that will prepare the learners for current practice and generations to come.

NEW! Continuing Education Survey
The ACGME is launching a continuing medical education/continuing education activity survey to gather insights on the educational needs currently facing the graduate medical education (GME) community. The survey is open to all members of the GME community and through it the ACGME hopes to identify issues and concerns that can be addressed through an expansion of CME offerings. Share thoughts and opinions on future educational activities, as well as any other related topics. Survey results will inform development of future ACGME education initiatives and programming. This survey is an opportunity to hear directly from those in the GME community who are most impacted by the ACGME’s educational system. Everyone is encouraged to participate and share thoughts on how to improve education for all.
The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and will be available until August 7.

Register for the National Learning Community of Sponsoring Institutions Meeting
Designed specifically for designated institutional officials (DIOs) and institutional leaders, the meeting will convene in Chicago and online September 19-20, 2023.
The meeting will provide unique opportunities for shared learning and peer support; foster community building among Sponsoring Institutions; and present a venue in which Sponsoring Institutions can collaborate, share successful practices to strengthen clinical learning environments, and solve challenges. The CLER Program is hosting a Zoom workshop to explore the concept, purpose, and value of teaming in the clinical learning environment as defined in the CLER Pathways to Excellence framework. TUESDAY! Resources for Sponsoring Institutions
Some new indicators have been added to the institutional list of participating sites, including the “not in use” and the blue “star” icons.
- The “not in use” indicator identifies a Sponsoring Institution’s participating sites that are not currently listed in their sponsored programs’ list of participating sites. These sites should be removed from the Sponsoring Institution’s list of participating sites if they will not be used by program(s).
- The “star” indicator identifies the participating sites to which the Sponsoring Institution sends the largest number of programs. As of July 1, 2023, DIOs and institutional coordinators are responsible for updating the participating site type, ownership/control type, and Chief Executive Officer information of their Sponsoring Institution’s “most used” participating sites. Note: it is possible for a Sponsoring Institution to have multiple starred sites.
ACGME staff members will review these changes at upcoming open Zoom meetings held on the following Tuesdays:

Fall 2023 Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment Course Returns to In-Person Format
The ACGME will offer its longstanding Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment course in person in the ACGME office in Chicago, Illinois, October 8-13, 2023.
This course is intended to help participants design and make improvements in their own assessment programs and strive toward achieving the goals of competency-based medical education.

Residents reported enhanced perspective-taking and relationship-building with their patients in clinical settings across medical and procedural specialties.
Adverse Childhood Experiences, Household Income, and Mentorship Among Interns Who Are Underrepresented in Medicine

This article describes self-reported differences among underrepresented in medicine (UIM) and White first-year residents (i.e., interns) in household income growing up, physician mentorship, and adverse childhood experiences. The authors concluded that contextual considerations, such as the significant barriers and challenges UIM residents encounter growing up, need to be addressed during the residency and fellowship program application and onboarding processes to provide ongoing support to UIM learners.
ACGME Seeks Osteopathic Recognition Committee Member
The Osteopathic Recognition Committee is seeking one new physician member. Candidates must be a Director of Osteopathic Education in a program with Osteopathic Recognition.
Nominations are due August 1, 2023. The Recognition Committee will forward its selections to the ACGME Board of Directors for approval. The new member’s term will begin July 1, 2024 and end June 30, 2030.

The following Review Committee seeks its next public member for a six-year term beginning July 1, 2024. Public members share the perspective of the public, foster public accountability, enrich the work of the Review Committee through outside expertise, and create transparency. While nominees cannot be physicians, other health care professionals are permitted if they are not employed by an organization with ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship programs.
