Networking Opportunity Spotlight: Toast on the Terrace with ACGME Leadership

The Annual Educational Conference will bring together graduate medical education (GME) professionals for valuable networking opportunities (read more on the ACGME Blog), allowing all attendees to get the most out of the conference while making new and lasting connections.

Immediately following the Closing Plenary, the Toast on the Terrace closes out the conference with one last opportunity to celebrate those connections. Attendees will join ACGME leaders and staff members and colleagues to mingle and reflect on all they've learned and experienced over the last three days.

NEW! Resident/Fellow Researchers Sought for Emergency Medicine Requirements Project

The Review Committee for Emergency Medicine seeks two individuals to work on a data-driven project related to a major revision of the Program Requirements. The Review Committee will analyze and summarize data on the existing Program Requirements from the previous five years to identify trends and themes that may be relevant to the revision process, with the goal of publishing a summary of findings for the emergency medicine community.

Residents or fellows with an interest in acquiring knowledge and skills in data analysis and preparing a potential scholarly publication are encouraged to apply. The candidate must:

  • be a current resident or fellow in good academic standing in the individual’s emergency medicine or emergency medicine subspecialty program;
  • possess strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; 
  • be able to use judgment consistent with standards, practices, policies, and procedures to make recommendations to resolve problems or issues;
  • have strong computer and typing skills, including expertise with the Microsoft Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and Zoom;
  • exhibit a strong attention to detail and expert follow-up skills;
  • have time to dedicate to the project; and,
  • be able to maintain confidentiality.

NEW! Correction Made to Pediatrics Subspecialty Background and Intent

The Subspecialty-Specific Background and Intent related to program director and faculty qualifications was updated in 2021 to extend the date by which the program director and faculty members are expected to hold current subspecialty certification in pediatric hospital medicine to 2025. The new dates were inadvertently omitted from the last revision of the Program Requirements. The updated language has been restored in the documents available on the Program Requirements and FAQs and Applications page in the Pediatrics section of the ACGME website.

NEW! Fellowship Eligibility Announcement

Effective July 1, 2023, the Program Requirements for Pediatric Urology and for Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery will include the Common Program Requirements related to fellowship eligibility exceptions. These additional requirements permit eligibility exceptions for exceptionally qualified international graduate applicants. Learn more about the eligibility exception requirements by reviewing Common Program Requirements III.A.1.c)-III.A.1.c).(2) in the Common Program Requirements (Fellowship).

Requirement Clarification - Emergency Medicine

Current Program Requirement II.A.2.b) states:

"Program directors of programs approved for 18-35 residents must be provided no less than 35 percent of the aggregate support defined in the table above, and program directors of programs approved for 36 or more residents must be provided no less than 50 percent of the aggregate support defined in the table above [II.A.2.a)].”(Core)

There has been confusion in the community regarding the term “aggregate.” The Review Committee will initiate a focused revision to make the following change for clarity:

“Program directors of programs approved for 18-35 residents must be provided no less than 35 percent of the aggregate support defined in the table above, and program directors of programs approved for 36 or more residents must be provided no less than 50 percent of the aggregate support defined in the table above [II.A.2.a)].” (Core)

The authors of this study investigated factors associated with residency programs that report accepting J-1 visas or sponsoring H-1B visas for non-citizen applicants in internal medicine, the specialty most sought after by international medical graduates (IMGs). While prior evidence shows that most internal medicine programs that substantially enroll IMGs have low Doximity reputation rankings, this study demonstrates that high-ranking internal medicine programs are paradoxically more likely to report that they consider and sponsor visa-seeking applicants.

The Coalition for Physician Accountability recently convened its committee charged with addressing challenges in the transition from undergraduate to graduate medical education and making recommendations to improve the transition. This article summarizes those recommendations through the lens of the Quadruple Aim, a framework highlighting the goals of lower costs and improved patient outcomes, care team experiences, and patient experiences.

The authors call on GME program leaders to develop and implement residency- and fellowship-specific standardized letters across programs. They cite studies that show standardized letters may reduce implicit biases and better differentiate applicants.

This workshop is designed to provide a transitional experience into the role of chief resident. Small-group sessions and exercises offer incoming chief residents the tools, skills, and a learning environment designed to increase their understanding of their personal leadership styles, strengths, and weaknesses as leaders, developing knowledge and appreciation of group and interpersonal behavior and learning additional skills critical to success and satisfaction as both a clinician and leader.

All eight programs, held in Chicago and Philadelphia, are open to chief residents from all medical and surgical specialties.

Updated Review and Comment Form

The ACGME announces a new Review and Comment form. Responding to feedback from the community on the prior comment form and submission process, staff developed a new electronic form with hope to alleviate some of the administrative burden. The new form reduces the number of steps and keeps the process entirely online. Moving forward, submission of comments on Program Requirements will only be accepted using the electronic form, which will be available on the Review and Comment page of the ACGME website during the 45-day public review and comment period. Impact Statements and the proposed Program Requirements documents will remain on this page until the Board of Directors has voted on them, at which point they will move to the relevant specialty’s section of the website.
