NEW! Journal of Graduate Medical Education (JGME) Articles of the Week

A Coaching-Centered Inpatient Rotation Fosters Growth Mindset and Deliberate Practice in Resident Physicians

Alice J. Tang, MD, MHPE; Shira Sachs, MD; Neil Lim, MD; Ozan Unlu, MD; Stephanie J. Tang, MD; Deepa Rani Nandiwada, MD, MSEd; Anjile An, MPH; Arthur T. Evans, MD, MPH; Justin Choi, MD, MSc

Complex inpatient clinical environments can make it difficult for residents to engage in deliberate practice and develop a growth mindset, despite the importance of those strategies in developing leadership and teaching skills. This mixed methods study of resident and attending participants showed that a structured, coaching-centered acting-attending internal medicine rotation was associated with significantly higher deliberate practice behaviors and increased self-confidence in leadership and teaching skills. The structure normalized feedback, centered residents’ own goals, and reinforced the resident-as-leader role.
