The ACGME's Back to Bedside initiative is designed to empower residents and fellows to develop transformative projects that foster meaning and joy in work and allow them to engage on a deeper level with what is at the heart of medicine: their patients.

This Back to Bedside funding cycle offers two options for applicants to consider:

  • The Open Innovation option is intended to provide flexibility for novel proposals.
  • The Project in a Box - Focused Innovation option offers residents and fellows from all specialties a successful project example to use as inspiration for further innovation.

Proposals are due by April 22, 2024.

These one-hour Zoom calls will take place on the third Tuesday of each month at 1:00 p.m. Central and are open to the entire GME community. During these sessions, participants will provide information about efforts in GME and MUA/P, solve for common challenges, and share helpful resources. GME institution and program leaders will connect with peers and ACGME representatives in breakout groups or discussion.


ACGME Seeks Members for MUA/P Advisory Group

The ACGME seeks nominations of a resident/fellow and a senior clinical executive leader (e.g., chief executive officer, chief medical officer, chief nursing officer) for the MUA/P Advisory Group. This group provides consultation concerning implementation of the ACGME’s framework for MUA/P and GME.

The senior clinical executive leader will serve up to three years with the option of renewing for an additional three-year term. The resident/fellow will serve a two-year term. Self-nominations are accepted.

Studies across specialties have demonstrated gender disparities in feedback, learner assessments, and operative cases. In this study of gender differences in reported procedures among emergency medicine residents, authors identified modest differences across genders in three of 15 procedures.

The Climate Impact of Medical Residency Interview Travel in the United States and Canada: A Scoping Review

This scoping review examining the potential environmental impact of travel associated with in-person residency interviews in the US and Canada found three main themes: efforts to quantify the carbon footprint of interview travel; assessment of stakeholders’ perspectives on virtual interviews; and advocacy for virtual interviews. Overall, the literature suggests a high level of interest and concern around carbon emissions associated with in-person interviewing.

Shaping GME Major Requirements Revision: Call for Comments

Every 10 years, Review Committees are required to review their specialty-specific Program Requirements to determine necessary revisions. The ACGME Board of Directors has approved a new process for all such major revisions going forward.

The process convenes specialty-specific writing groups, who, along with members of the specialty community and leaders from other specialties and related fields, rigorously and creatively consider what the specialty will look like in the future (recognizing that the future is marked with significant uncertainty). Out of this process, the writing group drafts and proposes revisions to the Program Requirements that will prepare learners for current and future practice.
